Lily's New Sister

The sunlight comes through the window, warm on Lily's hands as she sits at the small table, and outside, the birds make a gentle chatter that never seems to stop, but on the wall, one picture is always slightly crooked. Lily has a soft, fluffy hair tie holding back her curly brown hair.

This afternoon, as she is drawing, her mother brings in a small, swaddled bundle, and Lily's pencils roll off the table as she jumps up to see. But when she tries to hold the baby, her mother says she is too little to hold her safely, and Lily feels a pang of frustration as she sits back down. The baby starts to cry, and Lily's mother is busy trying to soothe the baby.

As Lily sits, frowning, her mother says, "You look a bit cross, don't you?" Lily nods, feeling her face scrunch up. Her mother sits down beside her, but instead of taking the baby, she picks up one of Lily's pencils and starts to draw a simple cat on a piece of paper. "Would you like to add the whiskers?" she asks. Lily takes the pencil and starts to draw, her frustration slowly seeping away as she concentrates on the cat's face.

As the sun begins to set, casting a warm glow over the room, Lily's mother hands her a small, soft blanket. "Why don't you sit with the baby, and I'll sit with you?" she says. Lily sits down, and her mother sits beside her, wrapping the blanket around both of them. The baby has fallen asleep, and the birds outside have grown quieter, their chatter a gentle hum in the background.

From that day on, Lily sits with her mother and the baby, drawing and watching the birds, feeling the warm sunlight on her hands, and the soft blanket wrapped around them, a sense of peace and contentment settling over her like the quiet evening air.
